New College Worcester is a national residential school and college for children and young people aged 11 to 19 who are blind or vision impaired.

Prior experience of teaching students with vision impairment is NOT essential as full QTVI training will be provided by the college.

As our Head of Music you will deliver the majority of the music curriculum and provide leadership for the Music department (which consists of a modest number of visiting music teachers) while modelling exemplary practice and fostering a culture where high quality learning thrives.

Through collaborative leadership, the post holder champions effective teaching, innovation and professional growth, ensuring that the department continually reflects on and improves its practice.

Central to the role is the drive to raise student engagement and achievement, removing barriers to learning and ensuring every student is supported to reach their full potential. By building strong relationships, empowering staff, and maintaining high expectations, the Head of Music plays a pivotal role in shaping a department that is inclusive, ambitious and aligned with the values and vision of the college.


Your day to day duties will include

  • Teaching KS3, GCSE Music and through to A level / BTEC Level 3 Music and Music Technology.
  • Delivering and coordinating a wide range of extra-curricular music including individual music lessons and a variety of ensembles.
  • Working to further improve the quality of aspects of Music teaching across the team.
  • Supporting and monitoring teaching quality through lesson observations and mentoring staff to improve their teaching.


To be successful in this role you will need

  • Qualified teacher status (QTS) and GTC registered.
  • Appropriate qualifications for teaching Music.
  • To have or be willing to work towards achieving Qualified Teacher of the Vision Impaired (QTVI) recognition, including learning Braille and Music Braille.
  • Be a competent accompanist
  • Commitment to involving parents and carers in the education and progress of their child
  • Experience of working to ensure that every student achieves to the best of their ability and firm resolve in challenging barriers to a student’s success in Music and broader student outcomes
  • Experience of teaching music technology (desirable)

Salary: National Teachers' pay scale M1, plus SEN 1 allowance (following successful completion of QTVI course this moves to SEN Point 2) plus TLR 2
